George R.R. Martin writes sword-and-sorcery which concentrates on the swords. A Clash of Kings is the second volume of A Song of Ice and Fire, the sequence which began with A Game of Thrones and will take another four volumes to complete. The Seven Kingdoms are divided by revolt and blood feud; beyond their Northern borders, the men of the Night Watch fight the coming of a great cold and the walking corpses that travel with it; on the other side of the ocean, the last of the Kingdom's deposed ruling house mourns her horseclan husband and rears the dragonlets she hatched from his funeral pyre. This is character-driven fantasy--we see most events through the eyes of the sons and daughters of the Stark family, the once and future Kings of the North, whose father's judicial murder started the war. Martin avoids the cosy Californian cheeriness of many epic fantasies in favour of a sense of the squalor and grandeur of high medieval life; there is passion here, and misery and charm--and a profound sense of moral ambiguity as we learn to like the Richard III figure in this epic as much as the more virtuous Starks. --Roz Kaveney

One warning. Don't expect any happy endings in this book! This book is full of the brutality of war and all it entails. This book has pulled me further into the world of dragons, fire and ice! I can't wait to read book 3.

4.0 A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire #2)
If the first book was all set up, this book was for kicking back in your comfy chair, putting your feet up and settling in for the long haul. There were a lot of repeating motifs and themes throughout this book and the various storylines, but Martin never uses them in quite the same way. It makes it...

4.0 I'm Weak!
I'm weak! I've been reading this only in dribs and drabs. I hate this series but I can't look away. I have to know. I can't be left out in the cold. I'm weak! I can't pass up good, solid writing and the mystery of this entire series has me captivated. As long as a few characters stay alive I can liv...

5.0 A Clash of Kings
I love the tv show and love to read, but I had put off reading these books because I thought they might be difficult to understand. For me, they flow easily, and I enjoy every word. I do think watching the show first helped because I know many of the characters and lands in my mind already. Tyrio...
