When the train reaches Liverpool Street, the girl who ran so desperately to catch it at a little station in Suffolk remains slumped in her corner. She is quietly dead. She was burdened by a huge portfolio which, it is now discovered, contains nothing less than a seemingly genuine Constable, hitherto unknown and worth perhaps several hundred thousand pounds, as well as a lesser Gainsborough and a Tuner, also unknown.

Who is the dead woman? How did she die? Where did she acquire these remarkable paintings? These are some fo the questions that perplex Chief Inspector Piet Deventer of Scotland Yard. Deventer is young fro his rank, and this case is right up his alley: he's an authority on art forgeries.

The plot thickens to the consistency of a London fog, while accelerating to a surprising and wholly satisfying climax.
