Now don't get me wrong this is not a bad book and I can see why there are so many 5 star reviews. It's a warts and all story about Andre Debus 111 and his somewhat chaotic, violent and erratic life from a skinny frightened youth to a violent drug induced teenager and finally an author and writer of ...

It was ok, I was really only very engaged at the climax of the book. Otherwise the book was depressing without having any novel meaning for me.

Let the author's middle initials be a lesson. These are stories of stumbling small-towners and troublemakers. There are more than a few criminals. It's in dialect, but it's fast-paced. It feels like all the buildings Pancake takes you through are falling apart, and so are the characters' lives. It's...

This book was one of the most satisfying modern tragedies I have ever read. Dubus's prose is both very good and (mostly) unobtrusive. Because I couldn't anticipate the ending, I had to keep reading, and then I couldn't stop even when a the situation moved to a point from which it clearly couldn't be...

The premise was good, and I liked the title as well. Unfortunately, those were like the only positive aspects I recall from reading the book. It is about the people who had chance-meetings with the terrorists who later hijacked the planes on 9/11. But it was so boring. It took me a lot of discipli...

This is a rough book. It is about violence in all its forms, except war and genocide. Violence on a personal level. If swear words and rape and drugs are going to put you off, well then maybe this isn't a book for you. But read on. It is also about a dysfunctional family. I don't like dysfunctional ...

I'm just going to say one thing about this book :I hated Kathy with a passion . She was a bitch . Almost ruined the story for me .

A very beautiful and transporting writer, in which I can personally see some influence of Kerouac and Salinger, rather than the Hemingway described by Joyce Carol Oates. What a shame his life was ended so early, a shame for him, and a shame for us. The characters in Pancake's stories here remind me ...

Meh.I liked it, but thought it was only OK.Two couples that are friends cheat on each other with the other’s spouse. Everyone gets found out and one couple decides to stay together, while the other tries to have an open marriage that ultimately ends up in divorce. The second two stories follow the ...

After finishing House of Sand and Fog, I read some reviews on Kindle. Most gave four or five stars but scattered among those were a few one and two stars with comments such as 'the sale of the house could have been prevented, the premise just wasn't plausible and landscape description was wrong.' ...
