I've really enjoyed the first three books in this series, and though I enjoyed this one too it was a bit heavy on the sentimentality. Penrose crafts her plots around fictionalised versions of real historic events, and this time around it's mathematical machines and financial shenanigans that may o...
I enjoy this series so far, but this plot setup stretched the boundaries of plausibility a bit thin. It was still good, and the outing of Charlotte Sloane was inevitable and handled well, but the murder setup involving her cousin was played too strongly for nail biting suspense, in my opinion (as w...
Isn't that a pretty cover? I really enjoyed this first book in the Wrexford and Sloan Regency era mysteries quite a bit. It was a fast paced, engaging read, and I look forward to learning more about both Charlotte Sloan and the Earl of Wrexford in future books.
The first few pages of "Murder At Half Moon Gate" provoked, Ant, my inner pedant, into a rant about misused words, fluffy or impossible descriptions and misquoted sayings. You can see his points here With most books that would have been enough to push them onto my DNF pile. "Murder At Half Moon Ga...
Series: Wrexford & Sloane #1 I'm not sure what it was exactly, but this mystery didn't really work for me. Part of it may have been the alchemy references.; I was very pleased that the story didn't veer off in a woo-woo direction. And at least in this first book, there wasn't a silly romance. So...
I like these books; the first one had some plotting problems towards the end, but this one offered a much tighter and surprising story. The author does an excellent job with atmosphere and setting too, although I can't comment on historical anachronisms. Penrose does include an author note at the ...
This is one of those books that I liked in spite of demonstrable problems; a good example of when characters can overcome the flaws in a plot. Lord Wrexford is an accomplished chemist and has the means to devote his time to it in the privacy of his own home. He has a rather black reputation, alth...
"Murder On Black Swan Lane" is a fast, fun, mystery that pairs the haughty, overly-rational, I-could-be-a-scientist-if-I-put-in-the-effort Earl of Wrexford with the I-have-a-mysterious-and-probably-tragic-past-but-won't-talk-about-it Charlotte Sloane, a widow, living in poverty and surviving by penn...
The third installment of this series has certainly been the best so far, but it's still not good enough for me to recommend to anyone. The story continued from the first two books, and it would be difficult to know the players without having read the first two. Additionally, I found the individual...
This second-in-series book was better developed than the previous book in the series, but still a bit lacking in overall enjoyment. I will finish the series, but only because I am caught up with wanting to figure out the overarching plot, otherwise it would be a forgettable series and be dropped so...
