Ann Buermann Wass has a Ph.D. in costume and textile history from the University of Maryland. She is the history/museum specialist at Riversdale, a Federal era historic house museum of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission in Riverdale Park, Maryland. In this position, she primarily plans programs and exhibits, and she has mounted several costume exhibits. Before her employment at Riversdale, Ann taught costume and textiles courses at the University of Maryland and Morgan State University in Baltimore. She also worked in several Washington, DC, area costume shops, including the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arena Stage, and Theater of the First Amendment. Ann has been studying American dress of the early 19th century since 1996, when she constructed outfits for her husband and herself to wear to a period dinner. She presents juried papers and research exhibits, reviews articles for juried publications, and gives illustrated lectures on a variety of costume- and social history-related topics to general audiences. She also teaches hands-on clothing construction and accessories workshops. She continues to construct her own clothing for living history interpretation. She has portrayed an 1814 Baltimore citizen at Fort McHenry National Monument and has attended War of 1812 reenactments at various venues in Maryland and at Mississinewa, IN, Genesee Country Village, NY, and Chalmette, LA. Ann has been a member of the Costume Society of America since 1986 and has served on the Board of Directors and as the chair of the Stella Blum Student Research Grant.
