Это первый опубликованный сборник Ахматовой. И хотя видно, почему его тогда сочли многообещающим, проверку временем выдерживают лишь несколько стихотворений, а сравнения с её же более поздними работами не выдержит ни одно.

I was warned that Akmatova's poetry was quite an experience. I have relatives who strongly dislike her for the more contemporary way in which she wrote, while a professor of mine praised her highly. I found her work to be quite heavy. Now, some poetry manages to pick the reader up and make them get ...

Anna Akhmatova (1889 - 1966) lived through the worst years of the 20th century in one of the worst locations in which to be a poet unwilling to play the role of a trained parrot for the ruthless and murderous apes running the country. Born in Odessa, she grew up in the small town just outside of St....

Honestly, there's just too much here I don't understand. And Russian history is not high on my list of topics to study - not because it's unworthy of study, of course. It's too far removed from my own life and is not often referenced and alluded to in most of what I read. Anyway, it would take a lot...

Amal’s recovering from the night before, where he allowed himself to get “stinking drunk” after leaving the hospital, his wife, and the now never to be born child of theirs. The ward sister had chased him out with well meaning remarks of support for his welfare and an understanding that he was in th...
