Two Nordic Noir books:

The Legacy by Yrsa Sigurdardottir (ISBN: 9781473621558)
Murder by Death
Added. :)
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
I'll have to go through my shelves on this one, but for starters I'd argue that all of these qualify for "modern noir"':

Ian Rankin -- The John Rebus series (first one is Knots and Crosses -- 9780312956738)
Peter May -- The Lewis Trilogy (first one is The Blackhouse -- 9781849163866)
Peter May -- The Coffin Road (9781784293130)
Michael Connelly -- Harry Bosch series (first one is The Black Echo -- 9780312950484)
Peter Robinson -- Ian Banks series (first one is Gallows View -- 9780380714001)
Val McDermid -- Karen Pirie series (first on is The Distant Echo -- 9780312994839)
Henning Mankell -- Kurt Wallander series (first one is Faceless Killers -- 9781565846050)
Jo Nesbø -- Harry Hole series (first one is The Bat -- 9780099581871)
Arnaldur Indriðason -- Inspector Erlendur series (first one translated into English (actually 3d in the series) is Jar City -- 9780099541837)
Peter Temple -- Jack Irish series (first one is Bad Debts -- 9781921758812)
John Connolly -- Charlie Parker series (first one is Every Dead Thing -- 9780671027315)
Ken Bruen -- Jack Taylor series (first one is The Guards -- 9780753152577)
Moonlight Madness
I agree on all of these.

Thank you! :)

Btw, would you say that Joy Ellis's "Their Lost Daughters" (http://booklikes.com/their-lost-daughters-joy-ellis/book,13835266) also qualifies as "modern noir"? I just downloaded the audio (hint: it's read by Richard Armitage), and I'd really love to be able to use it for this category if I can ...
Moonlight Madness
I am going to say yes. I also think it could fit in slasher stories, as well as the more generic "suspense" category, and there's at least one category still to come that it fits. It also looks really good, and Richard Armitage? Hell to the yes.
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Hehe. Exactly! :D

And thanks again.
Murder by Death
All added (I think). Thanks TA! :)

You're welcome!

Quick question:

I'd chosen "The Wire in the Blood" by Val McDermid for this square, and I just want to make sure I'm ok.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1855058.The_Wire_in_The_Blood

I chose it, because while I know the book isn't set in Scotland, it has been shelved as "Tartan noir" on Goodreads, and Val McDermid herself says she considers her work "Tartan Noir". My source for that last bit is wikipedia, so take that as you will. But mainly, even if it doesn't qualify as Tartan noir, I think it hits enough noir markers to qualify?
Moonlight Madness
Jennifer, I think that Val McDermid qualifies. Absolutely.
Jennifer's BOOooOOOks
Awesome! Thanks!
Murder by Death
Added.
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Michael Connelly - Dark Sacred Night ( 9780316484800) -- also works for "New Release")
Ian Rankin - In a House of Lies (9781409176886) -- also works for "New Release")
Peter May - I'll Keep You Safe (9781681440934) -- also works for "New Release")
Karin Slaughter - Will Trent series; first one is Tryptich (9780440242925) -- also works for "Terrifying Women"
Karin Slaughter - Grant County series, first one is Blindsighted (9780099421771) -- also works for "Terrifying Women"
Karin Fossum - Inspector Sejer series, first one is Eva's Eye (9780544227811) -- also works for "Terrifying Women"
Murder by Death
The first two are indeed new releases - they weren't in the DB yet. :)

Added. :)
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Oh geez, I'm sorry -- and thank you! (Also for adding the rest of my bookshelves trawling orgy of yesterday ...)
Murder by Death
No worries - I've figured out though, that ultimately it's easier to just 'add new book' than it is using the ShelveIt button on amazon; the record comes through without a cover, series information, or summary, so it still needs to be edited to be complete. I hate amazon. Have I mentioned that recently? ;-)
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Can't say it often enough, as far as I'm concerned. And I tend to add books by hand, too, for the same reasons -- it's just easier to do it right from scratch than having to correct erroneous info ... *and* more often than not hand-combine the newly-imported edition with what's already there to boot, instead of just going the "add new edition" route from the start.
Murder by Death
EXACTLY! I can't tell you how many I did using ShelveIt before it hit me that they weren't getting combined. ::facepalm::
Books, hockey, and a bucketful of snark
I'm probably going to read whatever Harry Bosch I happen to be up to for this.

What about the Aberystwyth books by Malcolm Pryce, or the Nursery Crime books by Jasper Fforde? They're more of a pastiche of noir, but have all the elements.
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
I'd say yes -- they might also be a solution for those who've got this square and aren't happy to go for more "hardcore" noir.
Murder by Death
Added - and good idea: I can look for the second nursery crimes book for my modern noir square (which I *was* worried about!).
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Books from Halloween Bingo 2018 participant reading plan lists posted to date:

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen (9780340935743)
The Scarf by Robert Bloch (9780450013416)
Ways to Die in Glasgow by Jay Stringer (9781477830109)
What Remains of Her by Eric Rickstad (9780062843319)
Nightblind by Ragnar Jonasson (9781910633113)

Broken Harbor by Tana French (9780340977651) -- do we want to add this? This is book 4 of the Dublin Murder Squad series, and we've already got book 1 on the list ("In the Woods").
Murder by Death
I do not want to be a hard liner here, but no way is Garden Spells Noir. If Magical Realism wasn't already a thing, I'd call it chick-lit.

Re: Broken Harbor: would you say the whole series is Noir, or just those two books? If it's the whole series, I'll note it in book 1's entry, otherwise, I'll add book 4.

Added the others.
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Re: Dublin Murder Squad, I haven't read the entire series yet, but from what I've seen of it I'd say the whole thing is "modern noir" -- it would be very hard to imagine a book not be written in that style and still fitting with the series. That's why I asked re: "Broken Harbour."

And based on the description I'd been wondering about "Garden Spells," too, but not having read it, would have given it the benefit of the doubt. Glad one of us knows for sure!
Kaethe
Made to Kill by Adam Christopher 076537918X. Would you believe "robot noir"?
Murder by Death
I'm not sure whether I think this is genius or cringe worthy. :)

Added.
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Lol. Both (genius and cringeworthy)?
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
More books from the participants' reading plan lists -- including unassigned / "free square" / "wild card" books that would fit this category:

Ice Princess by Camilla Läckberg (9781451621747)
The Ex-Wife by Jess Ryder (9781786814050)
The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (9780751571400)
A Deadly Brew by Lynn Cahoon (ASIN: B078LNGPBJ)
Blood Moon by Alexandra Sokoloff (9781477822050)
The Word Is Murder by Anthony Horowitz
Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz (9781409159445)
Edinburgh Twilight by Carole Lawrence (9781477848814)
The Rock by Robert Daws (9781911331193)
The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde (9780143038924) -- do we want to add it, though? The first "Nursery Crime" book ("The Big Over Easy") is already on the list.
Broken Ground by Val McDermid (9781408709351) -- again, do we want to add it? The first Karen Pirie novel ("The Distant Echo") is already on the list.

Murder by Death
ISBNs not in database:

9781786814050
9780751571400
9781911331193

Added via title search. I didn't add A Deadly Brew because it is categorically NOT noir.
Murder by Death
Also - didn't add the last two, because you're right, the first in the series is already there for both.
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Cool, thanks. And the three missing editions are now in the DB, so if you want to add "The Ex-Wife" and "The Cuckoo's Calling", you can now do so with these ISBNs. (Haven't read "The Ex-Wife", but "The Cuckoo's Calling" definitely belongs here.)
Murder by Death
I thought I had added Cuckoo's Calling - grrr... Both are now there.
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Thank you and no worries! :)
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
More from the participants' "reading plans" posts:

Snow Blind by Ragnar Jonasson (9781910633038)
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane (9780553824483)

added
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
Thank you!
Themis-Athena's Garden of Books
The Ice Beneath Her by Camilla Grebe (9781785761997)
Portable Monsters
I see cuckoos calling on the list. Would the newest book in the series also count as modern noir? I planned The Scarf but now I realize that it probably is just noir as it was written in the late 1940s.
