A relaxing book full of soothing quotes about nature, with beautiful photographic illustrations. A majority of the quotes are from historical wilderness literature, much of which is over 100 years old. Listen to the colorful voices of the American past, as they speak of simpler times when nature favored "trespassers" and the ocean, desert, mountains and open skies were welcome relief from "civilization." This book features a breadth of literary resources including Rachel Carson, Edward Abbey, Mary Austin, HDThoreau, Frederick Rindge, John Muir, Everett Reuss, L.Frank Baum, and more. Editor K. Anderberg earned her M.A. Degree in CA History from CA State University at Northridge and these quotes come from her own private collection amassed during and after grad school. Photographs accompanying these nature quotes were taken by the editor, primarily in Southern and Central CA. While East Coast authors are included in this collection, there is a leaning towards West Coast U.S. nature in this book. Enjoyable as a leisurely stroll through desert trails of prickly pear cactus at the turn of the century, or a sweeping view of valleys from the peaks of unnamed mountains, or even as a trip to the forests under a canopy of winking stars, this book will take you into nature, with all its colors, textures and climates; with all its sights, smells and sounds.Great for a momentary escape from an office cubicle or an evening read before bed, but also fun to read outdoors, while camping, traveling and experiencing nature. Suitable for all ages and appropriate for use in K-12 and college classrooms to teach the art of wilderness literature authorship, as well as the importance of conservation and history. This book can also be used in stark institutional settings, such as hospitals, to soothe patients with green pastures and ocean breezes as distraction. The genre of wilderness literature is well-represented in this book, thus it also serves as a text book for writers, who would like to examine the art of writing about nature.
