Wow. What a crazy ride! I loved reading about Tess, her family, her uncle (who may not be a uncle) and having this whole thing set in Baltimore. Lippman manages to make Baltimore come alive and you get to see the many sides to Charm City. I really enjoyed Tess too since we don't just get her off and...
Tess is a rower, a sport about which I know nothing, so I liked that. I also enjoyed her reporter-background, and her extensive family connections, and the bookstore. A perfectly good set-up for a series.Mostly, though, I just like Lippman's writing.Library copy
When it appears a rowing buddy of hers murdered his fiancee's boss and lover, underemployed Tess Monaghan sets about trying to clear his name. But did Rock kill ace attorney Michael Abramowitz? If he didn't, who did and why? And can Tess find out before she winds up as dead as the lawyer?A long time...
Given how Lippman draws Tess Monaghan, ex-reporter and private investigator, and especially the loving portrait she renders of Baltimore, it comes as no surprise to read that she was a journalist in that city. The novel has a ring of authenticity about its city and the world of journalism and the la...
This is the first book in Laura Lippman's Tess Monagham series. Lippman tries her hand at writing a novel after spending 20 years as a journalist and she is sticking within what she knows with the characters and plot. The first Tess Monagham story is about an out of work journalist with a passion fo...
This is the first book in Lippman's Tess Monaghan series, and I could definitely tell that this was an early work. On the one hand, the writing is nowhere near as polished as that of more recent books such as What the Dead Know. However, it's not all bad news. Even though this book has its rough ...
A solid introduction to a series. Being newish to the Baltimore area, I really enjoyed the place-dropping approach the author took. I'll pick up the second book to see how the characters develop.
For me, this is a tough book to review. I liked it, and I might have really liked it... I just can't quite decide which. The story was engaging and intriguing. I didn't want to put the book down. But somehow, I felt as if I'd walked into the middle of a story and not the first in a series staring Tes...
This was probably more a 2.5 star book, but it helped to know that this was Lippman's first novel. I thought it was pretty clunky, with a few sections that worked very well. I am also not so sure how I feel about Tess (and all the side-kick characters), but I'd give the series another try and read t...
Lippman has been on my to read list for a bit. I read her essay in The Wire: Truth Be Told and then found out about her relationship with David Simon. When Amazon discounted this to under a dollar, I didn't have an excuse not to read it.Is it the best mystery I've read? No. But it does make me w...
