It used to be said that you worked to live, not lived to work. But somewhere along the way the distinction has become blurred.
And nobody’s really noticed.
It is 2037 and the world has changed.
Fifty huge companies now run the global economy; fifty companies so big they no longer need office space, they need lebensraum.
Edward 'Ed' Eckhart is an employee of one of these faceless companies and he’s not happy about it, not a good state of mind for a man with a gun and a discipline problem. ‘Enthusiastic’, ‘hard-working’ and ‘an excellent employee’ are just three of the descriptions Ed’s manager won’t be using in his next review.
It doesn’t help that it’s Monday morning, it’s raining outside and Ed’s trying to quit smoking.
Again.
Ed hates Monday's and going to work. He’s a trouble-shooter for the Analysis & Evolution (A&E) Department, a research department within The Company, and most Monday's he arrives at work to find that someone’s come up with yet another ingeniously dangerous way of getting him killed.
And today is no exception.
His manager wants him to find a scientist who’s gone missing. She’s been working on some very important research in the area of cybernetic technology and Ed’s bosses are keen to get her back. They believe she’s been kidnapped (headhunted with extreme prejudice) by another department.
With no other choice but to do what he’s told, Ed sets out to find the errant scientist and soon realises that today IS an exception.
It’s going to be worse.
With no other choice but to follow his instincts, Ed takes each problem that is thrown at him as it comes, until he finally comes face to face with the only problem he doesn’t have an answer for.
Himself.
