Carol Miller Lieber got the call to teach as a teenager and never stopped. Exploration of the art, craft, and science of teaching and learning has been her driving passion for over forty years as an educator in the roles of middle and high school teacher, school founder, principal, curriculum writer, clinical professor in teacher education, and professional development consultant, author, and program designer for Educators for Social Responsibility. Carol supports principals, leadership teams, and faculty in large and small high schools in their efforts to embed the five R's (rigor, relevance, relationships, responsibility, and [college and career] readiness) into every aspect of schooling: school climate, culture and student development initiatives, classroom practice, professional learning communities, and school-wide and classroom systems of discipline and student support. She is the author of many books and articles, most recently, Increasing College Access through School-Based Models of Postsecondary Preparation, Planning, and Support. Carol is an unrepentant Deweyan. She holds two unwavering hopes for a 21st century education: that schools will nurture the mind, heart, hand, and spirit of every student within democratic learning communities and that teachers and learners will recapture the qualities of joy, meaning, and imagination in their classrooms. These are the things that make learning REAL.
