The word itself conjures up mystery, romance, intrigue, and grandeur. I can't find fault with the illustrations and I agree that they are Caldecott worthy (1978 honor). But I'm forced to say that this book will probably be a little tedious for all but the most enthusiastic fans of castles and architecture. It reads much more like a reference book than a story book.

Uses the building of fictional Lord Kevin le Strange's castle to explain the purpose, architecture and culture of castles in 13th century Wales. Large black and white illustrations (ink and pen) scattered throughout the text help to clarify and extend the text. Reference aids: glossary.
