A Bostonian by birth and ancestry, Chester Brigham became totally addicted to Gloucester, Mass. at an early age. The family cottage on Goose Cove remained his home of the spirit during years at college, in the service, and during years of earning a living elsewhere. After he, with his wife Anthea, returned to the cove full-time, he has devoted himself to researching and writing about the heritage of the area as a fishing port and magnet for artists and authors. His first book, "The Stream I Go A-Fishing In," was about a schooner fisherman turned concert violinist. Then came "Gloucester's Bargain with the Sea" that took as its theme the compatibility of fishing, painting and writing peculiar to Gloucester. His most recent book, "On Opposite Tacks," compares the Gloucester legacy of a famous artist (John Sloan) with that of a legendary fishing captain and ocean adventurer who sailed from the port (Capt. Solomon Jacobs).
