I don't get what people see in this series. I've tried and now stay far away, the anime wasn't any better for me.

Well, this was the first Dragon Ball series. I heard from anime fans that Dragon Ball Z was amazing but it's just not that appealing to me in to motivate me to read them. But I head that Dragon Ball inspired a lot of authors for shounen manga and I can believe that.

I've heard that too. It's a huge influence for most modern mangaka and so many talk about what this series meant to them.
