I have the full series of books, but have only read the first 7, I think, due to . . . . time constraints and other reasons. I have the DVD of the two series from the 70s sitting on my desk as I type this. Robin Ellis, who played Ross Poldark in the original series, has a small part in the remake; he also has a fabulous twice-weekly blog on cooking, cats, and living in a small village in the south of France. Today's recipe is lamb tangine with dried apricots.
Ohhhh thanks. I shall watch this as soon as possible. It's really strange that I never heard of those earlier (and neither has my mother who is usually quite fit on English bookish things...but it seems a couple of things that did not involve murder escaped her XD)
And of course now I really need to read the books
For even more fun, Robin Ellis wrote a little documentary book, "Making Poldark" about his adventures, then expanded it a few years later. The longer version is available for Kindle, too. Recently he's done an audio version, I think timed to come out with the new BBC series.
And I've just lost another 40 minutes of my morning watching this BBC documentary!!!
The reason I know about this is because of the 1970s tv series Poldark (same one Linda is talking about!): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poldark
When it ran on US PBS it was a big deal - or as much as PBS had big deals then. My mother really loved it. Oddly the books never were pushed as much then, because mom probably would have gotten them. I've had the books on my TBR someday list.
Also I think a lot of people were watching because of Robin Ellis, so in that way the 2015 version seems to be using the same idea!
Well...it seems to be working so who can blame them? Of course I am sure they are also fascinating stories :D
But it seems I'll definitely give the books a try now (the new series anyway because...well and because I don't have much to watch atm) and who knows. I might see if I can find the 70s series afterwards as well

I love the line from early in this documentary: "Mr. Darcy, eat your heart out."

ETA: I bought the DVDs last spring, after I bought the last of the books I didn't already have.
