"sometimes the plotline is suddenly dropped and then gets picked up again when you least expect it"
I seem to remember this was what annoyed me with the 70s tv version - mainly because I was interested in what was going to happen between certain love interests and then it would take to get back to that couple's story. Of course it kept me watching, but I spent a lot of time thinking "meh, I hate this character, I wish we could move on to someone else."
Compared to today's series, do you feel the ending as is cliffhangery? Or pretty much the same?
Yeah it is occasionally strange (e.g. at one moment a couple is left in actual life-threatening danger, the chapter ends, completely different people appear and then we're told the resolution of that situation in a paragraph...) So far I can't really say that I hate or dislike certain characters a lot. I do care about some a bit more than others and yeah that can be frustrating.
I haven't watched any of the adaptations so I can't answer that. As said it's not one of the cliffhangers of the worst kind (some contemporary book-series really seem to stop mid-sentence) but it's still one that makes you want to read on
I eventually want to read this just to find out if the characters that annoyed me were like that in the book or not. Because it could totally have been the script or the actors or both - hard to know.
See those worst-kind cliffhangers I really hate (especially the mid-sentence kinda stuff, those are the worst and the authors know it) - the more usual "stuff is going to happen in the future that will be interesting!" kind, that I can take.
