There's a South American and Mexican music tradition of outlaw songs that I wish I could remember the name for (yet another time I kick myself for not taking Spanish, sigh) - which is a bit more like it because it does bring the more recent newsish type of outlaw activity into the songs. But then the western music songs about Jesse James or UK songs about highwaymen are probably the same tradition.
I was imagining more along the lines of poetry about murders instead of the stories on the nightly news. There's a Monty Python sketch that should have been written in that somewhere, with John Cleese singing a happy song about last night's bloody murder, selling papers on the street.
