I agree. I always thought Poirot had more empathy than Holmes, and not even he was entirely bereft of emotion, no matter what he occasionally said about himself.
I just thought that it was details like this, like Poirot's attire, like how Poirot would refer to himself and others, that weren't quite right - and that really made the book into something completely different.
On the other hand, I guess my estimation for AC's attention to detail, and especially her paying attention to how important such details are and how they can change the mood/tone of the book completely, has increased infinitely.
I just still can't believe that someone who is meant to be an AC expert can get it so wrong.
