And of course the penguin is the head of a big frozen food company. ;)
Seriously, tho, the characterisation of the kangaroo and even the minor characters was great. K.can be an ass but can also be really sweet and a great friend. And there were several twists: The end of book 2 was really quite sad - so I had to pick up book 3 straight away to make sure the K. was ok.
And the end of book 3...oh, my. Totally sweet. I would love to jot down details, but it would be spoilerific.
I had the audiobook running at my mum's (and in the evenings at the hotel in Berlin), and even my mum liked the stories. Not really her cuppa, I would have thought, but she laughed out loud a lot. :D
Oh, and there are sections that are taken from classic literature all the way through the books, so it was a lot of fun trying to recognise different books in the books. For example, the kangaroo is nameless and there is a dream sequence where it is only referred to as K. and tries to oppose a faceless authority - much like in the Kafka stories. There are also references to Apocalypse Now, Star Wars, LOTR, and just lot and lots of other works.
Normally, this might put me off but it really worked in this one.
