Maybe read a chapter or two every night? That way you won't get over whelmed by all the insects.

Oh, it's not the insects. I'd mind if the whole book were dealing with nothing else (except if it were bees), but not as long as there are other critters in here as well. It's more a matter of being in the right frame of mind for anything other than pure escape literature, due to heavy and seriously unpleasant real life interference.

Too bad we can't put real life on hold the way you can an annoying book...

There are also 2 more books I've come across about navigation (haven't read them):
- Wayfinding: The Science and Mystery of How Humans Navigate the World by by M.R. O'Connor
- Sea People: The Puzzle of Polynesia by Christina Thompson

"Real life on hold" would definitely be the ticket right now. Sigh. This, too, shall pass ...

The O'Connor book looks like it deals specifically with human navigation so this might be a nice extension to the David Barrie book.

That's what I spontaneously thought, too, when I saw the title.
