I've had this one on my Kindle for a long time. Now I gotta read it. Especially since I'm a Louisiana gal!

I'd love to know if it was accurate -- not the characters. They're obviously overdrawn. But the setting :)

I'll start reading and letcha know. Now you've got me all curious. Let me just say this, I think tv does not always provide a fair portrayal of the majority of Louisiana natives. Most of us are normal speaking citizens and I have NEVER wrestled an alligator AND my backyard is not a swamp. However, I have eaten alligator and while crawfishin this spring, I was very aware of their presence in the ponds. Most were small but the big ones were sunning along the bayou banks. And, we do live across the street from a small bayou. I may have a slight accent but it is NOT as pronounced and flat as the true Cajuns of Louisiana. One thing is factual and that is this: I love my football teams with all my heart. About to sit down and watch the New Orleans Saints game already in progress. Who Dat!! ( fans scream THIS) and I bleed purple & gold! (Fans say THIS of our elite college team that sports the colors) Geaux Tigers!! LSU!! And if you're from Louisiana and you don't love either team...well, I shudder to think of the consequences. One may be Shunned. Lol!

I get the football thing -- even if football means something a bit different over here. Currently a mad house as the two West Australian teams in the national competition are in with a chance for the Grand Final. Streets are being painted team colours. Even sausages dyed purple! http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/afl-finals-2015-western-derby-grand-final-what-you-need-to-know-about-tickets-20150913-gjlb8h.html

Right!! I love both our football traditions!! I WISH they'd let us paint the streets here! Lol!
Hey, Jen! I know this post was awhile back but I just wanted to mention how much I enjoyed reading it & how happy I am that YOU introduced me to this funny, interesting Louisiana author. It's kinda funny to say that an Australian introduced me, a Louisiana native, to a La. author. Funny thing is, when I started following Jana on Amazon, I found that I had downloaded a few of her books. I guess they must've been free & I snapped em up. Thanks!! I giggled quite a bit reading this book and I bought the next book in the series. I love supporting Louisiana authors. I began collecting La. Festival posters many years ago. I frame them and hang each all over my house. Very cool! And it makes for interesting convo starters when I have first-time guests. Anyway, collecting the posters led to collecting La. authors (fiction and nonfiction) and Louisiana books. I've only recently begin with the books so I've got lots to look forward to but I'm lovin DeLeon. She's got quite a few books out. I may be too busy to read. Lol. So, accurate...I think you said it best when you wrote "improbabilities" in your review. I think DeLeon may have exaggerated a few things. But then again, she was raised in Louisiana, too, and maybe her hometown was smaller and had a few characters like the book. I'm familiar with the area she was raised and it is pretty swampy there. Unfortunately, a hurricane came through several years back that "swamped" the entire parish. Things that were once there were destroyed or reclaimed biy the floods. That area is closer to the coastal waters of the Gulf. And I know alligators are in abundance there. Also, small Cajun towns or villages tend to be populated by families, cousins, and all sorts of distant relations, so Yes! Everyone knows everyone and gossip is rampant. Everyone knows your business! It wouldn't surprise me one bit to discover that a place like Sinful really existed. Lol. And around here, old money & politics rule. It's who you know. I'm jot quite sure around bout the "you kill em, we cook em" signs. Louisiana IS called "the Sportsman paradise". Almost every man in the state hunts. And the women are pretty accurate with a shotgun too. I know I am!! (Altho I gave up hunting a year ago. I'd rather shoot an animal with my camera.) Louisiana is a state covered in marsh, waterways, swamps, lakes, and very flatland. However, it's also got large cities such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lafayette and those big cities have many suburbs. So, no! Louisiana is not one big swampy place where everyone is smalltown, country bumpkin. But for each of those big cities, there are small little towns that are just as lovely and southern as the next, filled with some of the nicest people in the world. Along the Mississippi, there are beautiful planations that make one long for yesterday. St. Francisville comes to mind and Im reminded of the River Road Tour, where one can visit Oak Alley and walk under majestic Live Oaks hundreds of years old. Or Nottoway, the grandest of all the plantations. Louisiana is a variety, like a gumbo. A little bit of dis, and a whole lotta dat! Hope my explanation helped. Haha. I may have over done it, too. But I love my state!!

Mary, you've really brought your state alive for me -- and I'm thrilled you enjoyed Louisiana Longshot. Such a different world to my quiet Aussie suburb ;)
One of these days I'm going to travel to Australia. It's at the very top of my bucket list.

LOL Whereas you've convinced me to not only add New Orleans, but to travel out from there to see the country and towns :)
We'll swap for a week! As much as you love history, you'd love touring the antebellum homes. And, New Orleans? My happy place! Trying to schedule a weekend getaway there soon. One can never get enough of NOLa!!! I found a book online called New Orleans: A Book Lovers Guide. It suggests locations to visit where famous book scenes take place, authors homes, etc. I'd love to do that! Then, there are so many great bookshops in tge French Quarter. I'm in Heaven when I'm there. So much fun!! Of course, one of my favorite things to do is beniets from Café du Monde & head across street to Jackson Square, find a shady spot & people watch. Oh yeah!! When my husband and I were younger & lived there briefly, people watching was a weekendifferent ritual. See some interesting folks. And it's thecbest, FREE entertainment!! One day, Jenny! A girl can dream! :)
