Whether worrying that they'll get the best of him, which would obviously impair his ability, or that fighting them will distract him or take up energy/attention from being a good partner... if that makes any sense?

I think you're probably right, but, honestly? I'm struggling to pay attention as I read, and to return to it after I set it down. I really don't think it's the book's fault, though. At least not if my enjoyment of that paintball scene is anything to go by. :)
