You find out that one is female in the second volume, but I wish it had been mentioned in this first one.

I really wanted to like this more than I did :/.
Happens to me a lot. If the concept is sufficiently appealing I'll check back in over time, to see if the execution is more pleasing. Some writers never do work for me, but many others get better and better.
