The "a sockful of damp sand in a nocturnal alleyway" really is a great description. Pratchett's books are really very special in that regard.

They are! I'm constantly amazed at how he manages to put into words feelings that can often seem so amorphous.

@A Reading Life - Just try one of his books! :D (Not the first two in the series, tho...they aren't great, yet. He needed a little time to fully develop.)
