I'm pretty sure it jumped the shark in book one. Then a whale in book 2, then the earth, the universe etc. It was total crack. I'm bewildered still at my enjoyment. Heh.

I totally understand what you are saying... I've only finished book 2, but I am hooked and uncharacteristically forgiving of all its faults.
