This sound very good, I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. I love character-driven novels myself, so I'll give it a look.

I absolutely recommend it, but be prepared - this book is very much a product of its time, written in the mid 1970's, and the themes of self discovery, emotional availability, and the pressure to conform and achieve are of that period in US pop culture.

Also, if you haven't seen the movie, you should look for it. It's currently available through Amazon Prime video. Outstanding performances by Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland, and Timothy Hutton. I think every teenaged girl of my acquaintance fell in love with Timothy Hutton when that movie came out.

The film also won four Oscars in 1981: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Timothy Hutton), Best Director (Robert Redford) and Best Screenplay (Alvin Sargent).

I have no idea how Mary Tyler Moore walked away without an Oscar, but that's a damn shame.
