In a good way?

In a good way. It's not a dry recounting of everyone's personal history, but setting the context almost in the way a good fiction does.

That sounds really good.

I listened to this one and enjoyed it, though that's probably not the best word to use.
Also, Jack Olsen was an incredible true crime writer. Every one of his books I read was excellent:
SON, DOC, (Doc was truly shocking), PREDATOR, and THE MISBEGOTTEN SON.

I have Doc on my shelf, in hardcover. Also probably because you recommended it. :)

DOC was dismaying, to say the least. This author put me on a big true crime binge back in the day, but SALT OF THE EARTH was a more recent read/listen for me.

I'm enjoying it so far, and I like true crime, so I'll probably go through his back catalog.

I hope you enjoy them, if you do give them a go. :)
