I totally agree with your assessment about Helen. Also, IIRC, I started this one and read about half of it and I got so. fucking. bored. that I had to set it aside.
Yeah, I put this one down too, for a while. I usually read them in about 2 days, and this time it was about a month.
I haven't read the books in this series but I'm watching the TV series and loving it. Is Helen going to die? Maybe they wouldn't kill her in the screen version. They're already separated anyway.
I don't know. They took such a radical departure from the plot of the first novel that I didn't continue to watch the series.
