if you get through book two, book three is (imho) the best of the trilogy.

Yay! I'm glad you had some fun with it at the end and it wasn't the disappointment you were worried it would be. :)

All I can say about the other two is that I expected to really dislike book 2 because of the time travel (not my jam), but I ended up liking it way more than I expected to (Gallowglass - I might have developed a crush on Gallowglass). Book 3 is really good, but it's the only one I won't listen to on audio - it has a few gritty scenes in it that are very small in the larger sense of the book, but aren't what I want to hear just as I'm drifting off to sleep. :P

"ludicrous moments" aside it's a nice trilogy and I have to agree book 3 was the best!
