I finished the audio version yesterday and ended up liking the mini-bios of Marsh, Haeckel and Muir a lot. Haeckel's influence on the Art Nouveau movement was an unexpected surprise; loved it! And as a native Californian, Muir's legacy is still very much with us, like the on-going movement to restore the Hetch Hetchy Valley. Marsh's contributions were equally interesting, and I may look into more detailed bios on all three.
Humboldt's bleaker sentiments in the epilog really hit home. His predictions about human's expansion to other planets sadly echo my own thoughts; human vice, greed, violence and ignorance turning distant stars barren, indeed. :(
