Funny that you post this now: the friend I met in Amsterdam last week mentioned that he had read several of the old Norse myths in the original and I almost fell out of my chair in reverent awe. Then he explained to me pretty much what you just posted: he's fluent in Icelandic so it wasn't difficult to read the original Old Norse. Still impressive, but slightly less awe-inspiring. ;)
I'm with you; he speaks 5 languages and I can barely speak one, but Icelandic?? I think I spent most of the three days in A'dam grilling him about the differences in the languages and laughing over my attempts to pronounce the words. :D
