This may be a daft question, but do books count towards the task only after the task has been announced or can any book read during the "festive period" count towards a task (even if the book was read before the task has been announced)?

Also,...it wouldn't be the end of year without a re-read of Hogfather. :)
It wouldn't, and I'll definitely be rereading it either way! I can absolutely see a rogue buddy read happening if this doesn't end up being the Festive Tasks group read. (We just didn't want to take it for granted that everybody would feel this way.)

Your question isn't daft in the least -- the hosts will confer on this and get back to you (believe it or not, this hadn't even occurred to us).
The hosts have conferred: Retconning your reads is OK!

Brilliant. Thank you. :)
You're welcome!

This is a good opportunity for me to do my first group read in the Flat Book Society - despite my good intentions, I haven't done a single book yet for that book club.
Let's hope the dinosaur book will make for an auspicious beginning!

It will also help me toward my "support my public library" goal, because I just put a hold on it. It's supposed to be available next week.
That is, of course, the best reason of all to read it!

I've only read the first two Discworld books. Would I be totally lost reading Hogfather or can it work as a stand-alone?
BrokenTune 6 years ago
You'll be fine. There is a backstory to some of the characters but all you need to know will be explained in the book and it does work as a standalone.
Definitely not. It was one of the very first books I read, and I was at home in the story immediately. And if you've read the first 2 Rincewind books (and thus have come across the Unseen University and its workings, that's even better). You'll be doing perfectly fine.

Thanks, BT and TA! I'll try to snag a copy in time for the buddy read.

I kinda get excited when someone picks up Hogfather for the first time. It just gives me the warm fuzzies to see someone read that book.
Very true. You're going to love this one, DP -- this is one of those books that I wish I could read for the first time all over again ... every single time.

Hmmmm. Perhaps I'll buy a copy instead of borrowing from the library...

Library is good. Buy your own copy for the inevitable re-read. ;D
Seconded.
