Great review! It's a shame it wasn't better. Just sounds like the main character was hard to like even if there were parts of his pov that were good. It's always hard when you just can't be as emotionally invested in a character as you want to be. Kind of makes the rest of the book not as great. Still it sounds like it was an okay read and it could have been so much worse.
I think the idea was he was just "a guy", wasn't perfect, did stupid things he regretted he wasn't a hero or a hero material he went to the army for "stupid" reasons and when he came back a year later - the part that we read in the book - he is different, he matured and he isn't the guy he used to be because of what he's been through. and YET for me he didn't change enough to be likable and as you said, it's hard to be emotionally invested in the story that way and since he's the one you should pity...
We all appreciate a character who ISN'T perfect. who feels absolutely real like you might meet "him" or "her" one day. but he needs to have something that makes him the "main hero" that you want to read about HIM.
Yep, I love imperfect characters, even characters who screw up or do bad things that I don't agree with but there definitely has to be something about them that you can get behind or some redeeming quality. Either that or they have to learn and start changing enough to make you care.
exactly! for me this one was a little miss but I guess some people would like it. maybe if you are closer of age and you can "get" him, if you were a bit like him and you matured then you could relate.
