I just started making mine and of course two of the books I've read this year are sort of set nowhere. I guess I could get away with claiming The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun is Germany because it is based on the Nibelungen myth but that's already a stretch and the Castle of Otranto is just set in gothic fantasyland XD
Ah, well, I guess you can 'travel' there as well. It just won't show up beautifully on a world map. But good point, I haven't figured out yet what to do with fictional worlds. I think I'll just pretend they're real...
Love this! Are you using any specific site or ??? for marking off the countries/states? (Just wondering if you do the graphics yourself of if you're using something that shades them in for you.)
I think this would be great fun as a tracker, like you're doing it, as opposed to a challenge, which is how I've always seen it done.
Thank you! I wish I could make these things myself, but luckily other people have put all kinds of tools online to use. I used this one: http://www.amcharts.com/visited_countries/ but there are a lot of different ones out there.
Thanks for the info! I think I might put one together for myself. It will be interesting to see where I end up at the end of the year (or five years from now). Although I've read "What I was Doing While You Were Breeding" about a week ago; it's a memoir of the author's travels all over the world with each chapter in a different country. Is that cheating do you think? :)
I think one the great things of this being NOT a challenge is that you're absolute free to fill in everything as you see fit. =)
I think I'll try to stay with one country/book, but I have to see how that will work out eventually.
Take for example the book I'm currently reading: Grave Mercy. It's about Brittany trying to stay independent from France (but ironically it will light up France on my chart)
Oh I just noticed you read The Last Breath - I know her! Ok, 'know' is a strong word: we've met. She and my best friend are good friends and I watched the flower parade in Lisse NL from her house about a gazillion years ago. I'm not sure it's my kind of read, but hope you enjoyed it!
What a coincidence! Is the author Dutch then? I didn't know (but probably should have known since I'm Dutch myself; but have never been to Lisse). It was not my typical read but it was enjoyable (my review will be up somewhere in the next few days I guess).
She's American, but her husband is Dutch. They've since moved to the States but she and my BF keep in touch (which is how I knew about the book). I'll look for your review, I'll be curious to read your thoughts about it.
Urban Fantasy? XD
I think you could still make it with the fictional worlds as it is still travelling. Perhaps if you're creative you can draw/design something yourself?
I've been doing a read across America challenge for a while now - I intended to finish quickly, but ran out of steam!. And I don't know if you are on GR, but there is a whole group dedicated to this kind of challenge: Around the World in 80 Books
Thank you! I do not intend to make it a challenge, just to keep track of where I happen to land, so to speak. I've got a lot of ARCs to read, so I'm not yet in the position to go and look for books. Perhaps in a few months.

There are great resources there for finding books set in specific countries/states.
Good luck with your challenge!
