thanks for this! they both sound good and i'm going to pick them up soon :)
Most of the LGBT books I read are YA, so I can't help you if you're looking for something more adult, although I've heard good things about Sarah Waters' books. I'm also not sure how you're counting genre, but My Real Children by Jo Walton was a good book and had prominent LGBT characters, although Goodreads does not list "LGBT" as a genre. So, again, it depends on how you're classifying your books.

If you don't mind YA, I've read a few good ones this year. Almost anything David Levithan writes would fit the category - I read Two Boys Kissing this year, also Will Grayson, Will Grayson which he wrote with John Green is one I read recently and liked. I also recommend Beautiful Music for Ugly Children by Kristin Cronn-Mills. The main character is transgender. I'm also a big fan of Ellen Hopkins and many of her books are classified as LGBT as well, although not all.

Oh, I can second Sarah Waters.
BrokenTune 10 years ago
Sarah Waters, absolutely.
Book Wonderland 10 years ago
i mostly read YA so I wouldn't mind reading a ya lgbt books. thanks for this, i'll be definitely checking out Sarah Waters as well as the other books you mentioned. Though I did own Will Grayson Will Grayson at one point but I honestly don't like John Green's books all that much.

If you want to try LGBT in a science fiction setting, try Stephen Fry's Making History. The LGBT dimension isn't dominant, but it plays an important part of Fry's story nonetheless.

thank you! i'll be checking it out soon :)

I recommend The Miseducation of Cameron Post by emily danforth. I read it for banned book week, after it was banned by the Cape Henlopen School District last summer.

If you are interested, you can find my review here:

oooh, i love banned books. Thank you!:)
Elizabeth Bear has quite a few books with non straight main characters (sf/fantasy)
RedT Reads Randomly 10 years ago
Yes! Karen Memory if you like Western steampunk.
Dust is one of my favorite books hands down, and that and Carnival both have non-straight relationships between the primary characters.
Book Wonderland 10 years ago
I'm not the hugest fan of realistic fiction so thank you! :) I'm going to be checking those out soon
They're definitely not contemporary fiction at all!

Dust starts out reading like a high fantasy novel then reveals itself to be hard sci fi/transhumanist novel. Elizabeth Bear self-describes it as a "gothic romance."

Carnival is also sci-fi, setting is an inter-galatic society that's outlawed homosexuality, with two men who used to be lovers being sent as ambassadors to a planet that's matriarchial with the primary relationships all lesbian, men are either "gentles" or essentially breeding stock that take part in gladiatorial combat to demonstrait their prowess. She uses the setting to play with perceptions of gender roles

Carnival sounds really good. Right now I'm rereading a few books because they're sequels have just come out, but I really want to read those two. I shall be picking them up within the month for sure.

Not overtly LGBT but enough people over at Goodreads shelved it that way and so many people already picked all my favorites (Aristotle & Dante!!) you might try Frog Music by Emma Donahue.
Book Wonderland 10 years ago
thank you. i read Aristotle and Dante last year and thought it was pretty good but I've never heard of the other one
I'm Reading Comeeks 10 years ago
Hi! I can't help recommending things. I second Frog Music by Emma Donahue for one.

Also, anything by Andrew Smith, especially Grasshopper Jungle.

A couple classics; Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden and I'll Get There (I just hope it's worth the Trip) by John Donovan. Both highly recommended.

For newer stuff, A Hero at the End of the World by Erin Claiborne (it's a bit fanfiction-y).

Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld

Adam by Ariel Schrag (highly recommended)

Love Minus Eighty by Will McIntosh (highly recommended)
Book Wonderland 10 years ago
thank you! love minus eighty sounds like i'm going to have to read it soon
I'm Reading Comeeks 10 years ago
You're welcome! Hope you enjoy Love Minus Eighty - McIntosh is one of my favorite writers. :)
Unless the challenge says otherwise I don't see why fanfic wouldn't count?

I liked the Vanyel series by Mercedes Lackey, which starts with Magic's Pawn. It is (as you can probably tell from the title...) fantasy.
I probably have more buried somewhere in my head, but I can't think of any at the moment.
Book Wonderland 10 years ago
sometimes fanfictions are as long as novels, i think they should count. yet like actual books it takes me forever to finish them.
thank you for the recommendation. :)
