Miss Austen had a very keen eye for the ridiculous! (Re: names - I'm sure you have figured this out already, but one convention I eventually twigged to is that only the eldest daughter was referred to as "Miss Last-Name", while all her younger sisters were always "Miss First-Name Last-Name". So if it's just "Miss Last-Name", assume it's the eldest).
Regarding the names, somebody mentioned something similar to me on another site while I was still reading the book, so I was actually watching for that. Eventually I figured out that there was a difference between being indirectly referred to (as you said) and being addressed directly. It seems obvious in retrospect, but at first I wasn’t distinguishing between that so, when I saw the younger sisters being *addressed* as “Miss Bennet” by people who were talking to them, I was skeptical of the rule.
Though I confess Mrs. Bennet is the silliest mother in fiction, and Rev. Collins leaves me in stitches.
