This was required reading when I was a kid and I have to admit: I did not like it at all. Which only means I come by my dislike for Science Fiction honestly. :)
I know I would have LOVED a book like this then because I still remember fondly some similar ones, with fantasy/sci-fi tags and heavy religious themes (like Ami). These days, the idea that goodness, or help in being good/strong/righteous, is to be sought outside ourselves/comes from without just rubs me wrong.
I adore Madeleine L'Engle. I'm not at all religious - about as atheist as they come - but the fact that she was a deeply religious woman has the same impact on me as the fact that C.S. Lewis was a Christian apologist. It reminds me that faith and brilliance and intellectual curiosity can, and often do, coexist comfortably within a person, and in the era of the American, evangelical Christian right, this is an important reminder for me. Some of my booklikes friends do the same, although we generally avoid discussions of faith on this website.
I loved this book as a child, and read it to my daughter, who didn't love it as much as I did. I'm very excited about the movie.
