I think the story I was thinking off was The Rendesvous, which is in another collection of her stories. I had two books out from the library at the time.
Anyway, I also remember The Appletree. :)
Her stories are really good, and not what I expected after reading her novels.
They were really good, and not what I was expecting. I did not even know she had written the story in which Hitchcock's movie was based, so it was a complete and gratifying surprise.
I own a novel of hers that have still pending: The Glass-blowers... which was translated as "Through the storm" annoyingly (and baffle-inducing) enough. It is not auspicious for my nitpicking ways.
I own this collection and I agree that they're "eerie maybe-normal-maybe-fantastical/grothesque/horror ". That's a good way of putting it!
My favorite story in there is The Old Man - I read it, went what?! and reread it immediately! I bought all of her books in some long ago Kobo sale but I find I have to take them in small doses.

Are you continuing with Du Maurier?
