On the plus side, the bumbling klutz stuff isn't a constant running gag (thankfully - many more scenes like the one with the underwear would have turned me off). Hurley is a constant though the competition thing isn't.
Also, if you decide to continue past the second book, Lucky Stiff is the least enjoyable book of the lot. And I'm glad you liked this one enough to read the second one. :)
Oh God! The scene with the underwear made me cringe. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt that she's new at the crime scene thing and was maybe half asleep. Aside from Hurley being kind of dull, I really DID enjoy this book a lot. I think Mattie has a lot of potential to be a likable main character.
Thanks for the heads up about Lucky Stiff. If I get to that one, I'll go into it with an adjusted expectation. But yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to reading the second in this series.
