I read this one years ago - after I saw the movie (which I adore). I don't remember thinking much of it at the time, but I think that's partially because it was significantly different in tone and atmosphere from the movie and it caught me off guard. I had a hard time figuring out what was going on too.
I wouldn't mind re-reading it someday to see if my feelings about it are the same now, after so much time has passed.
I'm still debating whether or not to check out the movie. I've always been overly fond of Sandra Bullock. Everyone I've spoken to IRL have told me that they loved the movie, though they've never read the book so they don't have a comparison. I'm tempted just to see how significantly different the two are.
The narration was just too "meander-y" for me... if that makes any sense. I had an idea of what was going on overall, but it took a lot of random tangents getting there. O.o
I read that this is one of the cases where people actually prefer the movie to the book. I can't say that it was a terrible book, but definitely not something I'd personally recommend, though it DOES also have it's fair share of positive ratings on GR.
