I agree with the "this is not the wise old Merlin we know" sentiment -- my reaction precisely, in fact. I'm enormously enjoying the story, but Merlin here feels much closer to young Arthur (or in fact many a boy hero, period) than to the old wizard we know from most of the rest of Arthurian lore ...
