The first 3 books in the series are the weakest. After that it picks up. The writing gets better and the plot gets more complicated.
PS. I absolutely hated the audiobook. Whatever the narrator was doing, it just didn't fit with what was actually on the page (IMO) - emotion wise. And he reads too slowly.
I have the next 'Dresden File' book on audio, so I'm going to give this series a second go. I'll keep in mind that the first three books are the weakest--thanks for the heads up. I didn't mind James Marsters' narration, except for the huge breaths and sighs he keeps taking. So in future, I might just switch to print.
He made Harry sound like he was going to slit his wrists any minute! That is not the impression I got from the book, no matter how hard things got for Harry. And Harry does not huff and puff and sigh like everything is just too much for him. Good luck with the next audiobook. Better you than me.
A fellow soul-twin reader! I did not get the blanket roaring appeal of these, even less for volume two...
That said, might just be that noir is not my jam, even with the UF added. I've persevered in several series after a couple of lacklustre opening books just because some element interested me, and there should have been several bits that ought to have me hooked enough to keep trying *shrug*
Ah... I'm still not quite familiar with the noir-style, so I DID wonder if this would be considered as such. If these books are noir, then maybe I can insert the next book into the Modern Noir square I have, just to give this series a second try. I don't have a book selected for that square yet and was going to Transfigure it.
My intent had been to read 'Fool Moon' for the 'Full Moon' square, and 'Grave Peril' for the 'Graves and Graveyard' square, but if I end up not liking the series after all, then I'm not going to move onto the third book.
That being said, I've read a lot of first and second books in some UF series that had elements that interested me, but the series itself just never hooked me, or turned me off based on one or two factors that I didn't like. Overall, UF seems to be a genre I don't get into very readily, so when I DO (like 'InCryptids' because I'm in love with Aeslin mice), I'm super ecstatic. But I still keep trying new series if only because of series like 'InCryptids'. I want to find another good one to love! lol
