I hope your slump soon gets lost and your arm heals up. Looks like a great selection with which to recover from both.

I dimly remember Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts - I can't remember much about it but I do remember not hating it. That's a start, right?

That is definitely a start :). I´m quite optimistic about Taugenichts and I enjoyed every german classic that I have read so far. But I have to say that I haven´t read anything of Thomas Mann yet. Isn´t he one of these authors that you are not overly fond of?

Ha! "Not overly fond of" is putting it nicely. I'm always curious, tho, what others make of his books. Actually, Tod in Venedig was not half as frustrating as the others I've read by him (I'd still not freely recommend it). Are you eyeing up one of his books?

Mmh, I don´t know. My parents have an edition of "Die Buddenbrooks" at home. An awful lot of pages with extremely small print ... that does sound so appealing ;).
A few of my classmates read Tod in Venedig and as far as I can recall they liked it. But I haven´t made up my mind yet if I´m ever going to read something by Thomas Mann.

Never mind the physical condition of the book, the content made for painful reading, too. ;)

I fear Taugenichts will forever be ruined for me because I *hated* the school-teacher who read it with us... I'd never be able to read it without thinking of her. But I wish you fun with it and all the other books!
Lillelara 9 years ago
Thanks :). But I´m so sorry to hear that a teacher ruined a book for you and that you had such a bad teacher-experience in general.

Thanks...but at least there weren't many like her (of course I didn't love all my teachers, but there were only very few 'I wish I never met this person'-ones) and others introduced me to great books *eyes her shelf full of Jules Verne novels for which my 7th grade teacher is entirely to blame*

Jules Verne, huh? I never read one of his books (making a "read Jules Verne" mental note for myself).
I didn´t like all of my teachers either but I never had one of the "I hate him/her"-variety. Thank god, that does sound extremely stressful. As if being a teenager isn´t stressful enough ;).

Jules Verne is well worth the read. It sounds like a lovely recommendation to make (and to receive) in 7th grade.

I hope your arm gets better soon. And yay, you're planning on reading the Imperial Radch trilogy! I hope you like it. Just remember, the pacing can be kind of slow.

I'm also interested to see what you think of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I've had it for ages, but the length is kind of daunting.

Ancillary Justice is going to be a reread and I liked every single page of this novel the first time around. I´m dying to know how the story about Breq and Seivardan continues after the events in Ancillary Justice.

The sheer size of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell did put me off at first, but now I´m going to tackle this novel. I just hope the story is a captivating one.

Oh, that's right, I'd forgotten you'd read it already. I'll be interested to see what you think about how it all wraps up. I'll probably "reread" the third book starting next week, via the audiobook version.

Thanks, I´m sure I will :).
