I loved this series and consumed it greedily. Reading your review, I'm reminded of how little of it I've retained - the atmosphere, the complexity but none of the details.
I seldom re-read (although I've read the Potter books three times) but you've tempted me back to Dan Simmons

You've tempted me as well. I read the Hyperion books back when I was in my late teens and then I moved on to Simmon's horror stuff, (which is also great, btw.)
This author is new to me, but it sounds like I need to get acquainted with his work. Suggestions for the best book to start with? Should I put one SF and one horror on my TBR?
Out of the two novel I have read so far, I would recommend Hyperion as your first read. I liked The Terror because of it´s Arctic setting, but the ending was flawed and I don´t think it´s the best place to start with.
Putting "Song of Kali" on my TBR, btw :).
@Audio Book Junkie and Char: I would love to hear your thoughts on your possible re-reads. I´m curious if this book can evoke the same feeling the second time around.
