Nooo -- PLEASE don't start your Wentworth exploration with book 1 ("Grey Mask"). It's really not necessary (Miss Silver hardly makes any appearance at all), and it's badly cliched and NOT representative of the rest of the series at all!! I KNOW you're going to hate it, and I would really *not* want that to happen -- Miss Silver deserves so much better!
I haven't read "The Case is Closed" yet, but going by what I've heard, it's not much better than "Grey Mask". (In fact, all of the first five books were the ones where Wentworth was learning how to be a mystery writer -- and hence, strictly something for completists ... which I can confirm, having read book 5, "The Chinese Shawl").
"The Traveller Returns" is a much better starting point. Btw, I very much recommend asking Tigus about this series. He has read almost all of it, and he has steered Moonlight Reader and me to all of its highlights.
