Is the author trying to emulate Krakauer, do you think? That is very much the problem I had with Into the Wild, and at one point Krakauer blamed the author on a book about botany for McKendrick's (?) death because apparently she didn't point out in her book that certain berries had a diuretic effect.. or something along those lines.

Grann sounds quite similar from your description.

Oh no, Krakauer is much worse, I think. This was gold compared to Into The Wild.
