@Silence in the Library: I would also love to have met Dame Agatha, but I am really intrigued by your enthusiasm for Hammett and (even more) Chandler. Any favourites of these that you would recommend?

You can't go wrong with Sam Spade & Philip Marlowe. I'd recommend you start with The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep.
