Hello Lillelara! I totally agree about "Unterleuten" ... in fact, I was wondering about the same thing while I was reading it. How do you even begin to translate the title? (Let alone convey both the background and the literal meaning of the other villages' names, and half of Juli Zeh's choice of words?) And yeah, the general state of the German book industry is deplorable.
I see you've got that gorgeous HP hardback set, too ... *and* the complete Poirot box set. And I also think I recognize some of your nonfiction reads ... :D
Should anyone ever attempt to translate Unterleuten into English, I would try to read the translation. Just to see how that works out.
Some of these non-fiction books have very distinctive spines, don´t they? The Harry Potter´s are the paperback set, but with the same gorgeous covers as the hardcover ones :).
And yes, I bought the complete Poirot box set a while ago when it was on a bargain and I has to put it on display. It´s one of my prized possessions.
And I'm fairly certain there will be a translation of "Unterleuten" at some point -- they've translated pretty much every other one of her books ... Btw, the final twist in "Schilf" relies on a play on words that only works in German, too. I've so far refrained from trying to sneak-peek the English edition to see what the translator did with that one ... (but, hey, OTOH they've translated Thomas Mann -- so who's afraid of Juli Zeh, right?)

Mmh, recommendations ... "The Day of the Triffids" by John Wyndham would be a great place to start, which has a dystopian setting (with killerplants, btw). "Planetfall" and "After Atlas" by Emma Newman are both great books and I really liked Philip K. Dicks "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?". At the beginning of this year I´ve read "The Children of Time" by Adrian Tchaikovsky and I loved it. And if you are in the mood for military science fiction I can recommend "All You Need is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. You might know the movie "Edge of Tomorrow", which is based on this book. Military sci-fi is normally not my thing, but I really liked this book.
If you want to read something more thought provoking, an Ursula K. LeGuin novel might be something for you. I´ve read "The Left Hand of Darkness" and it was so good. Not sure if her books are a good place to start, though. They can be a bit dense.

Our Friends of the Library had a book sale today at the library and it was Sci-Fi day so it was a lot of Sci-Fi. I found a few books that looked interesting, some oldies that the cover made me smile so I had to grab them. They had a lot of oldies there and I loved the covers but I thought I'd just better grab a few today just to get me started.

Nine Coaches Waiting is going to be my next Mary Stewart read. I think as soon as the weather gets better, I might pick it up.
