I am loving all these new shelf options!

This is all wonderful, but...is there still not a way to check a lot of boxes and bulk 'REMOVE from shelf'? At the moment I only see bulk 'ADD to shelf'. I don't mean to delete the books altogether, just take them off of shelves in bulk. I still want the books and they're on other shelves, I just want them off a particular shelf and it's too much when i have to remove them one buy one if there are 1000's

We'll add option to remove books from thematic shelf (if all books belong to the same thematic shelf).

If you would like to delete books from your shelf (permanently) you can do this in table view.
SilverThistle 11 years ago
Thank you, that would be wonderful. I don't want to delete them I just want to take them all off a shelf I no longer use but still have them added to another shelf.

OK, we'll make it happen. You'll be able to remove one shelf from several books.

If you would like to delete a given thematic shelf permanently, you can do this on your Shelf Page. Hover over the Shelf Name and click 'x' - the shelf name will be deleted from your Shelf Page and will be no longer visible but the books that were put on the thematic shelf will stay on your Shelf Page and will be presented without the shelf that you deleted.

You can delete only shelves, not default statuses. You can also delete the shelf on new bookshelf settings page.

The books will be deleted only if you select the book and choose "Remove from shelf" (in book pop up) or "Delete selected books" (in table view).
Thank you very much for making the book sort order "sticky."

Thank you for the ability to create new statuses and making the book order sticky! The rest I think will be great too!
Like the addition of new exclusive statuses. Now all I need is the option to make my Read shelf non-exclusive and I will be able to track my re-reads the way I want to.

I'm curious though, if you add a book to a new exclusive status, will it show that you did that in your feed and timeline like it would if you set a book as "Read", "Planning to Read", or "Currently Reading" or will there be no notification of that?
Degrees of Affection 11 years ago
I'm curious about that too.

We'll add multiple re-read dates. Big changes to shelf and Dash will come with new book data base.
Multiple reread dates are great, but that doesn't really address what I was talking about. I hope some of the big changes to shelf and dash will include the ability to mark a book as "Planning to Read" or "Currently Reading" at the same time as keeping it marked "Read" when I'm doing re-reads.

Thanks for the updates and the new theme especially. As someone that is totally clueless about making my page pretty, I depend on the prefab themes to do that for me. :)
I am still a bit confused about the new shelf stuff. Can I make the default sort order different for each shelf? Or if I pick by date read they all will be sorted that way.
I'll figure it out somehow.

Sort option is for Shelf Page in general. You can select sort option for particular shelf only manually, not default.

Making the book order within shelves sticky is great, but I can't wait until you make the 'order by author' so that it's by the author's LAST NAME, not first, so Edward Lorn comes after Stephen King.

Also when do you think we might be able to start editing book pages? My shelves, ordered by author in ascending order start with a pages worth of books that don't have authors included in the record or their names are bracketed by punctuation marks, which takes them out of the usual alphabetical order and puts them at the beginning, no matter what the name is. Highly annoying if the book you're looking for is one of the ones whose record doesn't include the author's name.

Ditto.

We'll make the changes. Sorry for inconvenience. More shelf options and edits will appear with new book data base.
I actually prefer authors to be sorted by first name first so I hope that sorting by last name is just an option you make rather than a flat out change.

Thank you! Does this mean we'll soon be able to add re-read dates to our books?

Also, small request for the Shelf Settings page: Can we have the option to always load the shelves in table view? I never really use the Shelf view, so I'd love to have the option to change the default.

As always, you guys are awesome. :)
Sarah's Library 11 years ago
Yes! This too.

Yes to the re-read dates!

Thank you for all the work you do on this site! I'd love to see the ability to add books to shelves and write a review on the same screen, or at least not have the pop-up window close when shelves are saved, so that I have to search the book again before clicking through to write a review.

(I know there are tags, but I don't want to start every review with that--I just use shelves.)
BookLikes 11 years ago
Thank you for the suggestion. In the meantime, you can easily write a review by clicking book on your Shelf - choose "Create a post".

Catch-22: Even if I set DNF as an exclusive status, I still have to choose to mark the book as 'Planning to read', 'Currently reading' or 'Read', when DNF and the three must mark categories are mutually exclusive. If I mark a book DNF, I don't want it to count as a book I've read because IMHO 'read' means I've read it cover to cover --and I'm certainly not 'planning to read' or 'currently reading'.
Degrees of Affection 11 years ago
Agreed.
BookLikes 11 years ago
With Exclusive status you don't have to choose Read, Planning to, Currently reading status.

Follow the steps:
Click the book cover you want to add. Click "Add to bookshelf" in book pop up. Click "Edit exclusive statuses", select status of your choice (e.g. DNF). Save in pop up.

The book will appear only with Exclusive status on Shelf and will not be counted to Read, Planning to, Currently reading as they will not be marked.

Great improvements. I wonder if you could further refine the alphabetical option so that if the book begins with the word "A" as in "A Man for All Seasons", it's appears under "M" rather than "A"? The same thing for books that have "The" in the title. Hundreds of books filed under "t" for "The" isn't very helpful. Thanks.
Degrees of Affection 11 years ago
I second that!
Yeah so long as it's just an additional option and not a flat out change as I personally like how it currently is.

There will be new possibilities with new book data base, including sorting :)
