This is the best kind of review. The kind that makes us immediately want to read the story :)
I've been meaning to try Valente's writing. Most likely i'll start with this one.
Thank you Susana! That is a wonderful compliment. If the flourish of her writing doesn't turn you off, I highly, highly recommend her. If you like complicated love, this is perfect, otherwise I recommend her young adult--The Girl Who Circumnavigated. I'm still working my way through all her books.
Well, you wrote a perfect review!
No, this kind of writing is actually my cup of tea :) and this story has definitely grabbed my attention, so i'll definitely be starting with this one!
I'm also curious about her ya series. I hope to read it one of these days.

Catherynne Valente is one of those authors that I know can write well...but I just can't care.

Does that sound bad? I mean, I have agreat deal of respect for her writing. I've tried some of her books (The Orphan's Tales), and I have to say that as many of her books as I've tried to read. I haven't finished a single one.

The Orphan's tale was like Inception within Inception. I loved it, but I just couldn't keep track of it. I tried to read this one, as well, and the writing is lovely, but I just fell asleep.
It doesn't sound bad at all; I think it's about what drives a good story in the reader's mind. I'll take word-smithing and creativity over logicistics any day, but I know that drives others nutty. I usually have to wait for the right mood to read a book like this. The best can do both, of course.

You might enjoy The Girl Who Circumnavigated series more since you enjoyed Lightning Thief and Orphans' Tales--it retains her fun characterization, but has faster and more cohesive plotting.
